Rendering covers walls and ceilings with mineral or synthetic-resin mortars and creates the substrate for paint, tiles, or decorative coatings. The trade covers interior render on masonry and concrete (gypsum, lime, cement), exterior render with weather protection and insulating effect (lime-cement, silicate, silicone resin), restoration render for damp-loaded masonry, textured render for decorative interior and exterior surfaces, and clay render for ecological construction. Substrate assessment, absorbency and soundness, correct layer thickness (interior 10–15 mm, exterior 15–25 mm), and observing drying times between layers are essential. In Poland typically 30–40 % below German rates.
Which render for which substrate?: Masonry: lime-cement render, good vapour permeability. Concrete: bonding agent first, then cement or lime-cement render. Interior in living spaces: gypsum render (smooth, fast drying), in bathrooms and kitchens lime-cement (moisture-tolerant). Clay render on absorbent substrates with reed mesh.
Which layer thicknesses are standard?: Example Germany: interior render 10–15 mm in one layer, exterior in two layers (base 15–20 mm + topcoat 5–10 mm), total 20–30 mm. With very uneven masonry: thicker levelling render. EIFS topcoat 2–4 mm. Layer thickness significantly affects drying time.
Which drying times must be observed?: Example Germany: rule of thumb is 1 day per mm of layer thickness before further work or painting. 10 mm gypsum: about 10 days. 20 mm lime-cement: 2–3 weeks. With wallpaper or dense paints, wait for full drying – otherwise moisture damage and peeling.
What are the most common defects?: Cracks from too-fast drying or missing reinforcement mesh at junctions, voids from poor substrate preparation, discolouration from salts in the masonry, visible undulations from short screed rails, exterior render spalling from wrong material choice over insulation.
How long does rendering a single-family house take?: Interior render on 400 m² of wall machine-applied: 4–6 working days for a three-person team. Two-coat exterior render on 200 m² of facade: 6–10 days depending on weather. Plus drying time. Exterior render only above 5 °C without frost risk.
